--George Washington (1732-1799) 1st. President of the United States
"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified,
shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and
appreciated by their nation"

My heroes have always been cowboys.  Cowboys like those portrayed
by John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry;  slightly flawed but
standing up for the weak and the down-trodden - even at risk of their
own lives.  Yes, my heroes have always been cowboys.  Cowboys
outfitted in camouflage, olive green, khaki, dress blues and navy white;
riding steeds of steel across land, water and air or trekking tirelessly to
their destinations end; military personnel who unselfishly make it their
duty to hold the forward lines to protect our liberties.  They stand
steadfast against any foe whether protecting the United States or on
foreign soil for a people they do not know.  Their job is not about glory,
or winning an Oscar, or a tournament bowl or product endorsement
deals.  It is not about money, for the common soldier does not reap the
benefits of a monetary reward.  They join the armed forces to protect
and defend what our Constitution stands for.

They pray for peace and do not wish for war.  But when conflict comes,
they will defend the lines and protect the innocents whose lives have
been entrusted to them.  They know the price they and their families
may have to pay is high - for freedom is never cheap.  They carry the
scars of battle, some seen, some unseen, for the rest of their days.
Some, after months of medical intervention, succumb from their
wounds; some come home in flag draped coffins; while still others
never make it home at all.  It is to these men and women and their
families I dedicate the following pages.

Yes, my heroes have always been cowboys (and cowgirls) - ordinary
men and women outfitted in camouflage, olive green, khaki, dress blues
and navy white.

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), Founding Father and drafter of the Declaration of Independence, 3rd
President of the United States, once stated,
"The tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time
to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
Although he was speaking of citizens of the
United States and the need to take up arms against the government should they become to
tyrannical and start stripping the American people of our liberties, our foreign policy on world
containment of communism and dictatorships and the advancement of democracy has, indeed,
watered the trees of liberty with the blood of both patriots and tyrants.
